Arizona State Uses Press, Transition Points to Dominate SMU
TEMPE, Arizona - Arizona State men's basketball team used a relentless press and efficient transition points to defeat SMU 80-62 on Saturday night at Desert Financial Arena.
Pressing Defense Shines
Arizona State's defense was stifling throughout the game, forcing SMU into 18 turnovers. The Sun Devils' relentless press disrupted SMU's offensive flow, leading to numerous easy baskets for ASU in transition.
"Our press was a game-changer tonight," said head coach Bobby Hurley. "We were able to force turnovers and create a lot of momentum."
Transition Scores Create Advantage
The Sun Devils capitalized on SMU's turnovers, scoring 24 points off turnovers. ASU was also efficient in transition, generating 12 fast-break points.
Freshman guard DJ Horne led the transition charge, scoring 10 of his 14 points on fast breaks.
Balanced Scoring for ASU
Four Arizona State players scored in double figures, led by Senior forward Kimani Lawrence's 17 points. Senior guard Desmond Cambridge Jr. added 15 points, while junior forward Alonzo Verge Jr. and Horne each chipped in 14.
"We had great balance tonight," said Lawrence. "Everyone contributed and that's why we played so well."
SMU Struggles
SMU, which entered the game with a 2-0 record, had a difficult night offensively. The Mustangs shot just 37.5% from the field and were outrebounded 39-27.
"We didn't execute our offense well tonight," said SMU head coach Tim Jankovich. "Arizona State's defense was tough and we couldn't find our rhythm."
Outlook
Arizona State, now 3-0, will face Grand Canyon on Tuesday night at home. SMU, looking to bounce back, will take on UT Arlington next Saturday.
