Georgia maintained its No. 1 position after a 55-0 demolition of the Vanderbilt Commodores on Saturday. The Bulldogs' dominant defense stifled Vanderbilt's offense, allowing only 19 total yards of offense.
"Our defense is playing at an incredibly high level right now," said Georgia head coach Kirby Smart. "We're getting pressure on the quarterback and forcing turnovers."
Tennessee, who entered the week ranked No. 6, dropped to No. 9 after a 40-13 loss to the South Carolina Gamecocks. The Gamecocks' defense held Tennessee's high-powered offense to a mere 218 yards of total offense.
"We didn't execute like we needed to today," said Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel. "South Carolina played an excellent game, and we have a lot to learn from this setback."
The college football season is nearing its midpoint, and the rankings will continue to fluctuate as teams compete for playoff spots. Georgia remains the clear favorite to reach the College Football Playoff, but Tennessee and other contenders will be looking to make a run down the stretch.
