The Arizona offense struggled to move the ball consistently against the Texas Tech defense. Quarterback Jordan McCloud completed just 50% of his passes for 178 yards and a touchdown. The Wildcats rarely established a running game, managing only 84 yards on 23 attempts.
Penalties were a major problem for Arizona. The Wildcats were flagged 12 times for 115 yards, including several costly false starts and holding penalties. These penalties killed momentum and gave Texas Tech extra opportunities.
The Arizona defense, which has been a strength in recent games, was unable to contain the Texas Tech offense. Tech quarterback Donovan Smith threw for 302 yards and two touchdowns, while running back SaRodorick Thompson rushed for 137 yards and a score. The Wildcats also allowed several big plays, including a 94-yard touchdown pass in the second quarter.
Head coach Jedd Fisch has come under scrutiny for his coaching decisions. Some questioned his play calling on offense, particularly in the second half when Arizona abandoned the running game. Additionally, the decision to punt with just over two minutes remaining in the first half, trailing 17-7, was seen as too conservative.
The loss to Texas Tech is a major setback for Arizona. The Wildcats are now 1-3 on the season and face a tough road ahead. They will host Southern Utah next Saturday before traveling to UCLA the following week. If Arizona wants to make a bowl game this season, they will need to improve significantly in all areas.
"We didn't play to our standards today," said Fisch after the game. "We made too many mistakes and penalties. We have to learn from this and get better."
