The United States Women's National Team (USWNT) played to a goalless draw with England in a friendly match held at Wembley Stadium on October 7th, 2022. The match was a closely contested affair, with both teams showcasing their attacking prowess but failing to find the back of the net.
England dominated possession in the first half, creating several scoring opportunities. Lauren Hemp, in particular, was a constant threat with her dazzling dribbling and incisive passing. However, the USWNT defense held strong, led by center-back Becky Sauerbrunn. Goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher also made several crucial saves to keep England at bay.
The USWNT came out with renewed energy in the second half, taking control of midfield and generating their own scoring chances. Trinity Rodman and Ashley Hatch both had chances to put the Americans ahead, but their efforts were thwarted by England goalkeeper Mary Earps.
Both teams had golden opportunities to grab the winning goal in the closing stages of the match. In the 82nd minute, England's Ella Toone hit the crossbar with a powerful shot, while in the 89th minute, USWNT substitute Mallory Pugh narrowly missed the target with a close-range header.
"We were a bit unlucky today," said USWNT coach Vlatko Andonovski. "We had a few good chances, but we need to be more clinical in front of goal."
England manager Sarina Wiegman commented, "Overall, it was a good performance from us. We defended well and created some good chances, but we couldn't find the finishing touch."
The goalless draw leaves both teams in a positive frame of mind heading into the FIFA Women's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand next year. The USWNT will continue their preparations with a match against Spain on November 11th, while England will face Australia in a friendly on October 11th.
